HOMEABOUT USTIMELINESIRENSMISSILE SITESARCHITECTUREARCHIVERESOURCESFollow us:LA-43 White Point Nike Missile Site (1955-1974)              While some of the roads have been overlaid by park facilities, the double launch doors are still very evident. The checkpoint building in the lower right hand is still standing.  The main building has been converted into a nature learning center, and the skeleton of the missile assembly building remains. Despite attempts by members of the Nike Historical Society at refurbishing one of the launch pits, the site remains deserted.  While people can be seen walking dogs, or hiking the trials around the nature preserve, a trek to the top of the hill will reveal huge cement batteries built for large defensive arms.         LA-43 sits on the coast in San Pedro facing Catalina with most of the grounds still intact.  It was a strategically important part of the Palos Verdes peninsula in defending Los Angeles and its port.  During WWII, the Battery Bunkers on top of the hill housed two 16-inch guns.   During the Cold War, the launch facility was built to upgrade coastal defenses.  The missile site is in the custodianship of the Fort MacArthur Museum.Today, the area surrounding the site and its main building have been converted into The White Point Nature Preserve, of the Palos Verdes Land Conservancy.   Map of L.A.
